Intro to Entertainment Law

In Entertainment Law Articles, Music Law

Entertainment law is all about providing legal services to people working in the entertainment industry. If you are an upcoming artist in any one of the fields e.g. films, music, television, fashion, publishing and radio, you will require the basic knowledge about the law. This will ensure that you understand your rights as an artist and are not vulnerable to the numerous associated companies.

There are many facets to an artist. Some of you may also write and compose music besides performing. There are a number of actors who have their own stories and the list continues. When you have an idea and wish to execute it in any form, there are a lot of other factors involved. Let us take the example of a singer. The company that finances you, the band and the music publishers will ask you to sign contracts with them. In such a case, you need to be aware of the wording in the same and be vigilant during the whole process.

In many instances, artists have complained that someone else has copied their music and released it in the market before they could. There is something called ‘copyright’ which you will have to understand. There is an Act for the same which gives you the sole right to create, change, distribute and perform your composition. Unless there is an agreement with another person or company to use it for their benefit, you are the only person who can use it. This comes under intellectual property rights.

If your work is registered in your name with the appropriate governing body, you have the right to sue anyone who uses it without your consent. Here is a list of some of the types of entertainment laws:

  • Films – This includes aspects like the titles, the distributors, producers, the actors, music directors, directors, screenplay, etc.
  • Music – The musicians, composers, singers, etc are all involved.
  • Television and radio – License to air a certain show, copyright issues, etc come under this type.
  • Fashion – Designs, contracts of models, brand names, etc can all be included in this entity.

Our company is experienced and has helped many people in the entertainment industry to uphold their rights. With more and more people being involved in this huge sector, one needs to be careful in dealing with a third party.

    Hello,
I am currently a freshman at SUNY New Paltz, and I plan to pursue a career in law. I have always been interested in music, and I feel that entertainment law would be the perfect mix between my two interests of law and music. I was wondering if you can give me some advice as to what I should try to study during my undergrad, good places to intern at, and your honest opinion of any good Law schools in NY where I can further study entertainment law. Thank you so much for your time while reading this, I really appreciate it.
